Loft insulation buying guide

Out of sight, out of mind – the dark, dirty loft is one of the areas of the house that can be neglected in favour of rooms that are more accessible and see more use. But, while insulating the loft is not one of the most glamorous jobs in the world, you should only have to do it once and it will prove massively beneficial to your comfort as well as your bank balance.

But before you head up into the loft, it’s important to decide which type of insulating material you’re going to use to complete the job. And where once there was very little choice available, now there are a number of different options to choose from – that can all be mixed and matched to suit your needs. So whether you’re looking for something that’s eco-friendly, that’s kind to the skin or even provides a stable surface for walking on – we’ll take you through all the different materials available.

Before you begin

It’s important to understand how much existing insulation your home currently has, and subsequently how much new insulation you need to complete your project. For more on this, read our guide on How to insulate your loft.

Don’t forget that loft floor insulation is compression packed for easier handling and will expand to the advertised thickness when unwrapped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a difference to a room We live in a very old house with very draft windows. Used on all windows in a particularly cold room which is North facing - totally transformed that room. Much much warmer and no drafts. It is slightly unsightly but when we have people over I just pull the blinds so you cannot see it. Definitely recommend if you cannot put in double / secondary glazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job! We live in a 1800's cottage with old sash windows, when the winter comes the wind blows through the gaps in the frames and every morning the glass is soaking wet from condensation! The window film makes a huge difference, the room is warmer and there is no condensation! This is the 2nd yr I've used this product the 1st yr using the tape that comes supplied but it would sometimes come unstuck, this yr I bought some wider double sided tape which does the job much better and so far has stayed put. Can be a little fiddly to put up but after the 1st attempt its a doddle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its great and cheap A fabulous product. Anyone can do this... even me. I used Exitex not Stormguard. Slipping flim is perhaps because surfaces not cleaned properly (!) -Used in Canada for 40 years -Try it on the outside! I've put film on both sides of some windows. -Put top tape on first uncover it and then put both sides and bottom tapes on but keep them covered. Check your 'cut to size' film is big enough, THEN slowly start sticking it, uncovering tape as you go. -Try a small window first, Your 3rd window will be perfect. -I've not used the hairdryer as my windows are not overlooked. -Do read all web videos and advice... good to learn. -Stick tape to your thumb and then its easier to remove an inch of backing before sticking to window frame.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use Straightforward and easy to use, it made a tangible difference to the warmth in my rooms - would recommend to all

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheap and cheerful I was sceptical that this product would work but for the price its great as a temporary double glazing film for the winter months. I have used it over the glazed panels of a door. On the first attempt I must have shrunk it too much with the hairdrier as it pulled off as the room got warmer during the day. ie when the central heating was warmest. Tried again and its perfect, Its now been on for a week and its still OK so fingers crossed its doing its job and cutting down on condensation and I no longer have a 'cold spot'

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product I have a window of single glass with two panes. I fitted the secondary glazing film over the bottom pane and immediately it was obvious that the top pane was colder. It stands to reason that if you add an extra barrier and can trap an air layer, your room will lose heat more slowly. It's best to use the hairdryer again 24 hours later as the film won't shrink fully on the first go and fit the film in the coolest part of the day to reduce the chance of condensation. The film is easy to waste however, as it is folded in two so if your window is bigger than 150cm you need to cut along and if it is less than 150cm again you have to cut bits off the film. I reckon this film will save me a lot of money in gas bills though. It is good as it is cheaper than real double glazing or you may be renting and stays on for longer than just one season.
