How to fit ceiling lights

How to fit ceiling lights

A standard single pendant light fitting near the centre of the ceiling can sometimes leave a lot to be desired. As long as you can get to the ceiling void from above without too much disruption, it's not complicated to move a light to wherever you really need it. Alternatively, you can boost your light levels by adding extra pendants which you operate either by the existing switch or by a new one. You'll find that pre-wired lampholder-plus-flex combinations are widely available.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made to a price, but can't fault these lights Luckily I didn't read these reviews first, or would never have bought this light....bought three....one frosted shade had to be changed, as it had a strange shadow style mark, which could only be seen with the light on. the whole assembly is very light and extremely easy to fit, even has a template for the holes and an extra connecting block to secure the earth wire if it exists. comes with two long screws and wall fixings, but don't look like cavity fixings, so might be best to use the metal variety that expand and lock in the ceiling, get long screws though, same length as supplied. look very stylish when fitted, can't see bulb outline just a good bright light, using cheap low energy bayonet bulbs. very very pleased, bought others for £40 which went back due to quality issues, so very happy with these.....recommended.. P.S the connecting block is of the conventional screw type....the pushin style must have been discontinued. replaced horrible gu10 ( expensive ) down lighters

Rated 1 out of 5 by from SUVA ceiling lampshade I bought one of these some years back and have just now got around to looking at fitting instructions in advance of painting the bathroom ceiling. I encountered the same issue as 'Soontobeexbandqcustomer' and 'twinkleraz'. A screwless fitting really doesn't feel safe. It's conceivable that any tension in the wires in the ceiling space could cause the wires to withdraw from the holes and create a short circuit given the comment that they don't grip.   It's also not clear which wires go where, (although I suspect the 'which' bit may not be an issue), more a case of not being clear which of the various holes the wires could go. The The illustration of the fitting in the instructions don't look to be based on the actual fitting and is confusing as a consequence, so isn't any help. The lamp fitting also needs to be screwed to the ceiling mounting base in a precarious arrangement: lining up the holes in the lamp-fitting with the screw-receiving holes in the base the fitting's flat base sits on 4 pegs protruding from the mounting base, which would slide around when trying to screw them together. It seems a single integrated mounting base/lamp unit entailing screw-fitting the wires to the unit then fixing the entire unit to the ceiling would have been a better design.   The box says, specially imported for B&Q. Given the quality of the product and and the 75% negative reviews (including mine) it doesn't seem that B&Q quality assured the product before putting it on the market. They should be responsible and take it off the market. Not impressed with this at all.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Screwless connections - SUVA Sphere light fitting Screwless fittings - Bah. I have been up the top of my step ladder for far too long, with a torch (because the power is off) trying to fit the wire into the holes. Problem - which holes? None are marked, none grip. I have solid cable but only 3'' long so working blind. Bring back screws or at least mark clearly which hole (don't suggest the instructions sheet - it doesn't help and its the place for a good diagram). Some countersunk guide holes would help. I will avoid all screwless fittings from now on - if only they told you on the box. I was always told 'do em up good an tight' but these fittings feel dangerously loose. I came onto the website because I have not come across these type of fittings before and would expect some help and demonstration here but there is nothing. I agree with the previous review - Good price but rubbish. The screwless fittings let it down. A 15 min job? ...ha. Its worse than poor.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute rubbish not worth even one star. I wanted a nice clean plain light for the cloakroom and bought this. What a waste of money and time. Cheap plastic, poorly made. Instructions say to twist wires and push them into the holes where they will be gripped....not so. The wires bend when trying to push them into the tiny hole, so I had to use pointed tweezers to push them in. Then when trying to screw fitting to ceiling one came out, not gripped at all. Two small screws would have made the wire secure. The instructions are poor. It is now in the bin. If the option of posting a negative star rating existed I would have used it!
