Buyer's guide to showers

Buyer's guide to showers

A powerful, piping hot shower is one of the things we rely upon most in our bathrooms. Whether it’s getting you energised in the morning, reinvigorating you after your daily exercise, or washing away the stresses and strains of the day, your shower needs to be up to the task. And let’s not forget about washing your children’s hair, or hosing down a filthy dog! But, if you don’t make the right choices and buy the incorrect shower for your house, you could end up with a lukewarm trickle that’ll be more infuriating than helpful.

We’re here to make sure you find the right one for you. By taking you through all the elements you need to think about - from understanding your home water's pressure through to innovative shower features - we’ll help you work out what’s best for you and your family.

Before you begin

First off, you’ll need to know about your home’s boiler and water pressure in order to pick the right shower for you. Water pressure is the force of water in a pipe and it determines the flow of water running through it. The type of boiler or water system you have in your home dictates which showers, and taps, you can choose – as both systems have limitations as to what will work with them due to the water pressure.

Our helpful guide will help you to understand your water pressure system, and recommend the ideal type of shower based on this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good shower I bought this shower to replace an old fitting, and it was at the cheaper price range of the spectrum, but it looks well ; provides a good shower, and belies its reasonable price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smart looking shower We have had the same shower for a 20 years and when renewing our bathroom we decided it was time for a change. This shower was a better price than a replacement cartridge for our existing shower. It looks the business and is child's play to operate. Really pleased with this purchase and it arrived the next day.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So much wrong with this shower I'll start at the beginning, installation, and end with usage, you'll see for yourself. 1. The riser bar is too short. You have to position it just right in order to accommodate the tallest and shortest in your household, with no room at the top end to position it a few inches above your head to really wallow in the stream (I'm 6'2", so normal for a chap these days). My old riser bar was at least a foot longer. Why are they skimping on something like this? 2. The hose connector is on one side - on mine it's the left, though the picture above shows it on the right. This means that you need to make very sure when installing, what side you place the riser bar, otherwise the hose will tangle as it will be on the wrong side. I had to re-drill and re-fill the riser bar holes - annoying, and it looks ugly now as those holes will always be there. 3. There is something wrong with Triton's mixer filters, which seem to vibrate causing an awful racket! Every time I use my shower, it's like showering with an angry, geriatric, possibly half-drowned, wasp. The noise is so loud people can hear it downstairs. I've had an engineer out (that is the one good thing about Tesla, excellent customer service!) who I thought fixed it, but then it came back. He said it might be my water temperature - I need to turn it up so it doesn't "feather" at its max range. My water temperature just fine thanks, and was just fine with my old system. If I turn it up I'll get scalding hot water coming out of the non-mixer taps, which is not what I want for my safety or my gas bill! I've attached a video with this post, where I am adjusting it to try and show the difference. Since filming that, it's got worse and now vibrates all the time. Again, the old shower was fine, so I suggest Triton, that it's your mixing mechanism that needs work. 4. The shower head is too small. Really, for 90 quid, I expect a shower head that is bigger, or has more spread. I want to be able to stand under the shower and get wet, not have to sway left to right in order to saturate myself or on a cold winter's day, stay warm. I replaced it immediately. 5. The temperature indication gauge is printed on in this weird "got it cheap" yellowy-green color, that is almost impossible to see in the shower, on top of a highly-reflective chome finish, covered in steam (or even not). Check the video above and you will see. 6. The temperature indication gauge, in its single colour, has arrows that point both ways, with the number "38" in the middle! What does this mean? How can I possibly tell which is up and which is down? How can the shower know if 38 is the right temperature!? It's just utterly, utterly pointless, and shocking that for spending 90 quid, their design of one 2 main components of water flow (temperature and pressure) not only hasn't been thought about, but is completely ambiguous. 7. The temperature knob and the pressure knob have their maximum in different directions. Rather than turn them both, say, from towards you to away from you, to get minimum to maximum, one goes one way, and one the other. Totally unintuitive! Coupled with the rubbish indication, and often the angry wasp, you end up turning the temperature gauge and just waiting and reacting to get the right temp, rather than just intuitively adjusting the controls. All in all, a terrible shower system, that neither works well, or makes it easy to install or use. How can you spend probably 100s of 1000s to develop a product and just miss really basic, common sense stuff like I've listed above? All in all, I want a refund, but I can't be bothered to fight for it. I shall be getting a new shower bar, on its own, from somewhere else, as soon as I've finished doing the rest of the house. This is not a slight on B&Q, but Triton, who have made in my opinion, an OK shower but with enough wrong with it that it's a really bad purchase. AVOID.
