Before you begin

A few questions about how you’ll be using your mower can help narrow down your shopping options to find the perfect one.

How large is the lawn?

While smaller spaces are better suited to compact, lightweight mowers, larger gardens need a more durable and robust lawnmower. Greater power is needed to get around these broader lawns quickly and easily. Similarly, there are a number of innovative features that will help make even the toughest mowing job simple so look out for these.

Where will the lawnmower be stored?

Before deciding on the size of your lawnmower, think about both access and storage. Do you need to pass through gates in order to mow your back and front gardens? If so, be sure to measure these in advance of buying to avoid snapping up a model too big to fit through the doors. The same is true of where you'll be storing your lawnmower – make sure you can get it into your shed or garage, as well as having enough space to keep it out of the way.

How close is the lawn to a power source?

A power source close to your lawn gives you more options when it comes to your choice of lawnmower. However, don’t fret if your garden is very large or your lawn away from the power source – we have a wide range of mowers to suit every situation and size of garden.

Let's go through your options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic growth rate I planted the seeds on a Sunday and to my amazement the grass was through by the following Friday. After four weeks the lawn was ready for its first, as I said amazing

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick results even in 6-8 degrees April. I recently put weed and feed down first week of March since the weather wasn't showing frost for the next couple of weeks (Leeds, Yorkshire). I then sacrificed my lawn and put a thin mix of garden compost and sharp sand down 10 parts compost to 5 parts sand. I then waited a week for the area to settle the put down grass seed with a very light scattering of verve top soil. After 2 weeks I am seeing healthy growth of about 1cm. Very pleased for my early start to the perfect lawn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from started to germinate in 6 days Bought to cover 90m2 on newly laid top soil, top soil was mediocre in quality so was worried when i planted the seed, followed instructions on the bag, kept the area moist and after 6 days seeds began to germinate. (Sowed in early September) so far so good, from a total novice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great results I purchased this seed a week ago despite reading a couple of the reviews, I'm not particularly green fingered but I had a reasonable idea of what I should do, I had taken 9 tonnes of concrete up as we wanted to extend the lawn, I got some decent grade soil and set to work, after getting the lawn something like level I sowed the seed by hand giving a good coverage, and lightly raked it in ( not dragging it) hung a bright orange jacket over the garden fork to keep the birds of and left it for 2 days, on the 3rd day I rolled it, after 6 day from first sowing it the seed it's started to come through, now 7 days after its come through giving good coverage across the lawn. We have about 15mm of grass. We looked at turfing it at first which would have cost in excess of £230. The £200 saving can now be used else where. I would defiantly reccomend this seed to a friend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from They grew for me I felt I should comment on this product since after reading the other review I was quite reluctant to get it, but took the risk any way. I have been using several different makes of lawn seed over the past couple of months as, being a complete amateur, I was totally unaware how much seed I would require in total for my lawn, so had to keep going back and getting more from various places. By the time I got this product I had sort of learned a bit about lawn seed, and that they do really well if put on a layer of compost rather than just the naked soil, so I made sure to put these on top of a layer of compost too. They were sown at the back of the garden in the last strip left needing lawn on it, so I was able to compare them with the others I had laid. I can't complain at all, they are growing a treat. It took about 6 days to see them come through and compared to the other brands I have used, apart from the price (these being better value, as before I was only buying 1K boxes) they are the same, I can't notice any difference in the quality of the grass. You do have to make sure the ground beneath them is constantly moist and doesn't go dry while they are still in seed form, and as they start coming through, for me this meant watering three times a day on the days that were very hot and sunny, but other days were damp so I didn't need to bother. I planted them mid May, which comes towards the end of the recommend sowing window, so I can only assume the person whose seeds didn't grow, planted them when it was too hot and wasn't able to keep the ground consistently moist, this, or the soil quality was very low. I can't recommend enough putting a layer of compost down before you sow the seeds. I hope this was helpful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good Seed has been out for a while (weeks), on a freshly prepared strip of soil that contained compost. Not a sign, even with three lovely weather and constant watering.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I wish I had read this review before just purchasing and sowing. I had exactly the same experience with the B&Q Basic/economy grass seed. I was tempted to get the fast grow, which I see has better ratings, but was advised not to by the B&Q "in store expert" I will report back in three weeks, but I will be extremely disappointed if this grass seed does not produce grass after all of the hard work I have put in.
