The ultimate economy Bulb

I bought them a month ago and I couldn't have got the cheaper anywhere else

If using DC beware

Today I purchased three (x2) packs for a small shed lighting project, intending to run them off 8 AA batteries in series thus providing 12 volts DC as per specification. When I got them home, I decided to test one on a tiny 12V E23 battery, which was a left over from a mixed pack of five purchased in Poundland several years ago. The bulb flashed once very brightly, then nothing. i.e. kaput, dead, blown up, cooked, no more, etc... (I wondered why the price (£1) seemed too good to be true. With the second bulb in the pack, I decided to be more cautious, building up the voltage one 1.5 Volt cell at a time. When I got to 6 volts the bulb achieved the expected brightness (yes they are bright and will do the job required, however as I have a 12 volt battery pack I will have to wire them as series pairs rather than all parallel). Incidentally, I also had an ammeter attached whilst testing the second bulb. At 6 Volts, the current drawn was 200 mA. A quick calculation (using P=IV) puts the power at 1.2 Watts, marginally over the rated 1 printed on the bulb its-self. So a word of caution, despite it being printed on the packaging and on the bulb, these bulbs do not work at 12V DC; they burn out! However, they do seem to work OK at 6V. I have not tried them out using 12V AC. Clearly the manufacturer needs to do a bit more testing on this product, and label it correctly, both on the packaging and on the bulb its-self. Now I am a bulb short, so tomorrow will have to go back to the store.

Good, but they are bigger

These are ideal for replacing the old halogen capsule bulbs - provided that you have space. They're bigger, so on one our fittings the glass globes won't fit over them.
