Lilacs are an absolute delight in late spring, bearing masses of highly fragrant tiny flowers. This gorgeous, bushy shrub has unique purple flowers that are edged with white, causing a real sensation! Plant them as part of a mixed border or informal hedge
- Easy to grow in most well-drained, fertile, humus-rich alkaline to neutral soils. Thrives in chalky ground and appreciates mulching when planted in full sun. Dislikes strongly acidic soils in Sunny or shady areas

- Dig soil improver in to the soil. Dig a hole twice as big as the pot, remove the pot from the rootball and place in the hole, ensuring the top of the plant roots is level with the soil surface. Backfill soil around the roots and water well
- In midsummer remove the faded flower heads carefully using secateurs to avoid damaging the young shoots. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of soil improver around the base of the plant in early spring
