Formula changed

The formula changed about ten years ago. They still call it hammerite but it has new owners and although it claims to be high in VOCs it might as well be latex-based. I covered some gaps 24 hours ago and went to check it expecting the finish to be as tough as the original paint around it. You can literally scrape it off with your fingernail. I now have to decide whether to demand a refund or trust the claim that it will last for "eight years". If I go ahead and do the whole job and find it rusting again by next Spring the word "furious" will not begin to describe how I will feel.

Perfect

I was a bit wary after reading the previous reviews giving less than 5 stars but I found this absolutely brilliant. It’s done a great job on my double garage doors and leaves a nice smooth finish. I’ve had to do a double coat on one of the doors but that’s because of its age and was expected. I would’ve definitely recommend this one.

It's good

It did the trick for the job we had to paint an old ladder

Great finish and covers well

I bought this for a double garage door to cover a dark red colour and used a rolller to apply it, it covered really well and needed just two coats. There was still some paint left over. The smooth finish of the paint looks great very pleased with this paint!

Drys too fast

Nice product but be prepared to work fast and finish the job in one go ! It drys so fast that the paint left in the tin develops a skin whilst painting and so it needs constant stirring.

Difficult to recommend - limited use

I bought this to paint a garage door. I removed all the old paint and primed with Hammerite Special metal primer, as recommended by Hammerite The paint would not adhere properly to the primer, it sagged if I put too much paint on, it left streaks of primer showing through if I put it on too thinly, and if I tried to get any decent cover, it dragged off the first application. I abandoned the Hammerite before too much damage was done to my laborious preparation work, and used ordinary gloss white outdoor paint with two coats of undercoat. I believe that paint which claims to provide a gloss finish in one coat direct onto primer just does not exist. Nothing can beat a number of carefully applied coats on undercoat and gloss. This paint is probably OK for painting rusty old fence railings.
