- Surface Preparation - How to prepare bare wood for painting: Use 120 grit sandpaper to lightly sand your wood for an even finish. Sand in the direction of the grain. Once the dust has settled, wipe the area with white spirit. Any holes or cracks can be filled in with wood filler. You should also stop knots showing through your new paint job with knot blocker. How to prepare previously painted wood: The type of sandpaper you need to use depends on the quality of your paint. If your old paint isn’t flaking and is still in a good condition, use 240 grit sandpaper and just lightly sand the surface. If the paint is cracked or flaking, use 120 grit sandpaper. Sand flaking paint back to the bare wood. This is easiest to do with an electric sander. Once the dust has settled, wipe it away with white spirit and a damp cloth. Fill any holes or cracks with wood filler and prevent knots from darkening with knot blocker.

Do not buy this product
Terrible paint that’s not fit for purpose. Having applied two coats on an already green door, the paint finish is streaked and inconsistent, and not even glossy. Will have to start again. Complete waste of time. Do NOT buy this product.

Wood paint
Does exactly what it says on the tin, wood paint ( needs two coats ) and weatherproof.

Big Mistake
Picked this up thinking it was oil based, nowhere on tin indicating otherwise. Dicided to use as no time to go back to store, did 2 coats as one coat didn't cover a dark grey undercoat, outside window ruined, no body to paint, not a gloss finish, looks cheap and nasty. From a decorator of 35 years.

Good Paint
To put the record straight I can thoroughly recommend this paint. I painted my wooden front door with it about 4 years ago and it still looks good. Admittedly it took 3 coats to cover the dark wood stain but I would consider that the first coat a primer then the second an undercoat and finally a gloss. The good thing is that you only need to buy one pot. The 750ml pot was sufficient to cover both sides of the door and leave enough for touching up.

Worst paint I ever used
This is the worst paint I have ever bought. I have been painting for over 30 years so not new to it. I followed the instructions carefully but the gloss finish is still patchy after 5 coats! I did not paint in full sunlight as front door is north facing so always in the shade. I asked my neighbour who is in the trade and he advised me that the paint appears to dry too quickly. I normally buy Dulux Weathershield but I could not get the right shade so decided I would try Ronseal. The batch date is 05/2019 so not too old. I bought it last week but will now contact Ronseal for a refund.
