  • Suitable for Wood
  • Make sure the surface you’re protecting is clean, dry and free from paint, varnish or stain. Use a stiff brush to remove ingrained dirt. If you notice any mould, fungi or algae, use a garden cleaner to get rid of it. If there is paint, varnish and stain on your wood, you will need to strip it or sand it away. Decayed wood should be replaced with healthy timber. Replace at least 45cm past the rotted area to get the best results.
  • Give the tin a good shake so you get a consistent colour. For the end grains of your fence, dip them into the preserver so the wood is completely soaked. For the main sections of your fence panels, dip a brush and apply the stain. Wait 24 hours for the first coat to dry. You will need three coats for the best protection. Leave 24 hours between each coat. Avoid contact with bitumen, bitumen felt or mastics and plastics. Low temperature and increased humidity will increase drying time.

Great Product

I’ve used this product many times, great product, covers well.. I dropped some on my slabs, once dry you couldn’t even tell. Will buy again. A bit expensive, only downside

Best Product

Been using this for a few years now and it’s brilliant. So east to put on & doesn’t alter original colour

Good

Easy to use and very happy with this product. Ronseal is a very good brand.

Only time will tell

Whilst the wood initially appears darker after application, it dries lighter - and very close to clear. Only time will tell if it does exactly what it says on the tin and protects the wood, but I have had no problems with Ronseal products previously - and have every faith that it will vastly extend the life of my new fence! The coverage stated on the can does seem a little over generous - particularly on the first coat when the new wood soaks up the preserver at a faster rate.

Much too early to say

How do I review wood preserver? Surely I should come back in a year or two and tell you how it has worked? But will I remember to write a review? Probably not. So this is only about the product and its application. I've no idea if it's good at preserving wood. By the time I'd searched for clear, non-varnish, outdoor wood preservers the choice came down to a lot fewer than I expected. Ronseal was a name I knew so I purchased this one. The tin says "shake well". I did but there wasn't much movement of liquid in the tin. When I opened it, the tall tin was full to the cap. It was really difficult to pour into a painting tray without splashes and drips. My first thought was, "Oh no, I really should have shaken it more. This is just solvent. No preserver." But, no, it is really thin and clear. Do not expect paint or varnish thickness. This is less 'sticky' than water. The product thickness means that the wood really absorbs it quickly. It just soaks it up. But the downside of this very high solvent composition is that drips, splashes and creep are inevitable. It barely adheres to the brush. I managed to splash some on stone paving beside the wood I was treating and the marks really spread out quickly. I hope they will evaporate equally quickly and not leave any trace. Initially the wood tone was obviously darker where I'd treated it, but after several hours drying I was convinced it was going back to the lighter natural colour I preferred. One final common sense issue - please use this in very well ventilated areas, and take frequent breaks. The high solvent content doesn't seem appropriate for indoor or confined space use. Now then, will I remember to come back in a couple of years and complete this? Wait and see ...

Great wood treatment

Used this on a pergola. Very water repellent but took a few coats. Not too smelly but my project was outdoors. Brings out the grain in the wood nicely too. Got it at a good discounted price as well.
