Changed nothing

I bought this to cover sleepers as advice online was generally to use decking oil it has made no difference what so ever

Good product BUT ...

Like all Ronseal products pretty good but not worth the money . On a properly cleaned dry decking apply a cheap and cheerful clear decking oil as an undercoat . Wait 24/48 hours . Apply the basic Ronseal Decking oil and the finish is as good as if not better than the Ultimate. For me Natural Decking Oil is the tops ...

Doubtful

I wish I had read the reviews before buying this product. I had previously used an oil-based product for garden furniture, garage doors etc with apparent success. The usual material being no longer in stock and my need being urgent, I purchased this material in a hurry thinking it to be equivalent, if not superior. It is sold as "oil" but is water-based, so much so that even spills on clothes rinsed out without trace. If you are seeking something that looks and feels like oil, then you may be in for a big and expensive disappointment. We'll now have to wait for a few months to see the results.

Not bad, but!!

Thanks to a previous owner I have acres of wood decking. I re-oil every two years at great cost. This year I used the Ronseal's 'Ultimate' decking oil which applied nicely but you MUST apply at least two coats to get a sheen water proof finish. Do not use Ronseal's 'ordinary' decking oil; it is like water!! The 'Ultimate' may be a few pounds more but the additional cost is well worth it. If ever a high maintenance item was installed in the garden it is wooden decking. I now have plans to remove it all next year as the bi-annual cost of maintenance and oiling is too high.

WARNING! NOT "rainproof in just 90 minutes"!

As you can see from the photos, this product is NOT "rainproof in just 90 minutes", which it says on the tin. As usual, I cleaned all areas of the decking with Ronseal's decking cleaner and left to thoroughly dry for a couple of days before treating. All the rails and bannisters were then treated with this 'ultimate' decking oil by 3pm and left to dry. It rained about 2am that night and see photos for the result in the morning! The oil had washed in to horrible yellowy-white dribbles and layers, which later evaporated and appeared to leave no oil on the treated surfaces. It is a water-based oil that washed very easily out of the brushes, and it simply washed off the decking too. I have previously used Ronseal's bog-standard decking oil without any problems, and only bought this 'ultimate' version as it was on offer and said 'ultimate' and implied it was better. The staff at my local B&Q store was brilliant and exchanged all tins - including the one I had opened - for the bog-standard decking oil, with which I have had no problems (and treated the decking with instead, with good [waterproof] results). This 'ultimate' product is AWFUL - save your money and get Ronseal's bog-standard decking oil.The standard decking oil stinks to high heaven and is less environmentally friendly, but is a non-water-soluable oil and doesn't wash off! I am not a 'decking-treatment novice' and have been treating the decking every summer for about 15 years with no problems before.

Looks great but doesn’t last.

I treated my decking towards the end of last summer exactly as the tin said to do so. Looked amazing despite it being back breaking work to get it clean and then oil in (sore back and knees and I am only late 20s). But it hasn’t even lasted until now, the oil has lifted in most places on the decking leaving a awful dirty peeling look where it gets the lost traffic (trust me I don’t come out in my garden a lot in the winter just to put things in my bins). I wouldn’t recommend unless you like doing it every year, which is a painful, cleaning it and waiting for it to dry and then giving it two coats of oil and giving it enough time to dry between coats, weather dependant! Quite disappointed considering how good it looked!
