Wood keeps shrinking
Dissapointed Dan - 1 year ago
I wish I could delete my earlier review.
It's been a week since my first review but everything has got a lot worse.
The wood keeps on shrinking. The gap has got a lot bigger now.
I measured the width of the panels and 2 have shrunk by over 5mm each. Another two look to be going the same way and others are splitting - I've attached some pictures.
Now I either have to remove the panels (which means removing the sink and other fittings) and re-fit with new boards.
The alternative is buy one new pack from B&Q - split 2 boards and glue together to make on wider board to replace one that has shrunk so much, If I take this option I will need to leave the boards in the room for a good 6 months to a year to make sure they fully acclimatise.
The pictures below are all different areas in a room that is 2M X 1M (and only 2 of the walls have this on it).
Let it dry out for a lonnnnnng time!

I purchased half a dozen packs of this cladding to cover a wall in the downstairs cloakroom.
I opened all the packs and left the wood in the room for a couple of weeks to acclimatise.
Some were slightly twisted but not too bad.
I then primed the wood and fitted it using the clips i purchased with the boards.
Painted it and was really pleased with the result.
6 weeks later I started to notice a slight gap between two of the boards.
Now the gap is wider than tongue / groove and i can see the insulation between the boards and then more gaps started to appear.
One has also started to split
My advice - leave the boards for 3 months to fully acclimatise!

When fitting many of the t & g panels out of the first few packs I had to break off the back edge of the groove in order to slot in the tongue as those edges were thin and split - and incapable of accepting the tongue's thickness. Trying a further pack the groove was stiff and able to locate the tongue properly. Knowing that, I returned my remaining packs to look for others with proper grooves......it made all the difference and fitting the remaining panels was a piece of cake. Having said that most panels were slightly bowed [concave] - but bearing in mind the price that was acceptable and the overall effect when the job was done looked fine.
