- How many paving slabs do I need?
Calculate the number of slabs by dividing your paved area (length x width) by the area of one slab, then round up. Measure in metres, multiply to get square metres, and divide by each slab’s square metre size. Add 5 to 10 percent extra for cuts, breakage and future repairs. If you plan a specific pattern or joint width, allow slightly more material to account for offcuts.
- How many slabs are needed per m2?
The number of slabs per m2 depends on the slab size. Calculate it by converting slab dimensions to metres, multiplying length by width to get the slab area, then dividing 1 by that area, for example a 600mm x 600mm slab is 0.6 x 0.6 = 0.36m2 so 1 ÷ 0.36 ≈ 2.78 slabs per m2. Always round up to whole slabs and add 5 to 10% for cutting and breakage, more for complex layouts.
- How much does it cost to lay paving per m2?
Typical cost to lay paving varies, but you can expect around £40 to £100 per m2 including materials and labour. Final price depends on slab type, preparation and basework, subsoil conditions, drainage, edging, access, and removal of existing surfacing. Use a paving calculator to estimate materials, then get several tradespeople’s quotes to compare labour and any extras such as compacting, sand, cement or skip hire.
