Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Coverage, Great Finish If you are into Magnolia & need to get some decent paint on sharpish, this is the one. It covers pretty much anything in one coat. Even Black you only need to dab up before you paint all over. 10/10

Rated 5 out of 5 by from King of paint Purchased crown magnolia silk 10l whilst on offer to paint the wallpaper on the hallway and stairs which is around 35m square, old colour was warm magnolia, so quite similar albeit a little darker, most walls were fine after just one coat, where the old colour was darker (probably due to damp) it required two coats. I am very impressed by the result, nice bright shining finish, even coverage and looks expensive. The finish is a smart yellow look, anyone who asks what colour it is I reply 'elephant ivory tusk' as we all know magnolia sounds to plain! The paint is a nice consistency, easy to apply with little splashback. Not to thick or thin. I would recommend without hesitation as its a bargain

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great paint, shame about the skin I bought this paint January 2017, when I came to open it it unfortunately had a very thick skin on top. The paint it's self was very good and I only had to use one coat :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bright yellow I have Magnolia throughout my house. Magnolia is often described as having a "tint of cream" british standard BS 08B15. I bought a 10L tub of Crown vinyl silk from B & Q. I put on one coat over brilliant white and it came up yellow. I thought I had bought the wrong paint. Two more coats and its an even brighter yellow. Having trawled through postings on the net I found many complaints about Crown Magnolia with most complaining on how yellow this paint looked. Having painted my hallway and stairwell in the stuff I guess I am stuck with it. Its cheap and thats about the most positive thing I can say about it. Its very thick so thin it out if you do buy it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from At least 3 coats needed in places Brought this to paint over some walls that are painted grey. Most of the walls will be needing 3 coats. A partial tin of paint that we started the job with did a far better job.
