Product information

The 'Brown Turkey' fig, self-fertile and ideal for outdoor growth in the UK climate, is robust and fully hardy. This sought-after tree yields plentiful, sweet fruits with deep red flesh beneath their brown skins. Fruit development begins in spring and ripens from August to September, often with a second crop in late summer, maturing the following summer if protected in winter. Its attractive lobed foliage makes it an excellent choice when trained against a sunny wall or cultivated in a patio container.

Supplied as a pot grown plant in a 9cm nursery pot

    At maturity expect a height of 3m (9') with a spread of 4m (13').

Time to first crop after planting: Approximately 1 year.

Optimal yields expected in: Around 3 years.

    • Plant the pear tree in a sunny border in any well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Fruit trees should be fastened to a stake to prevent them from rocking in windy weather. Drive the stake into the ground prior to planting. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball of the tree. Plant fruit trees at the same soil level as they were in their original pots and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well.
    • Grow fig trees in a sheltered, sunny position. A warm, south facing site against a wall is ideal. Figs prefer a moisture retentive, fertile, well drained soil that is slightly alkaline. Prior to planting fig trees, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Figs have a vigorous growth habit but can be restricted by constructing a 60cm (2') square, open bottomed brick or concrete pit around the root system. Add a 15cm (6") layer of broken stone to the base of the pit. Alternatively plant figs in large patio containers using a well drained compost such as John Innes No.3. When growing fig trees in containers they should be repotted every two years. If figs are to be wall trained, install support wires prior to planting.
