Beautiful looking but faulty click system
Vivify - 1 month ago
I have installed laminates throughout several properties over many years, and have always found it relatively easy, usually taking 1 day per room, so I am a relatively experienced DIYer.
Firstly, the look and the aesthetics of the boards for the price are second to none. Full marks for that B&Q, but then it all starts to go downhill...
First problem: this particular angled click system design is limited in its application. I like my flooring to look aesthetically seamless, so I always fit under architraves and skirting because I hate the naff look of beading often used to hide the expansion gap. However, with this click design, it only clicks in place at an angle (very roughly 45 degrees or less), therefore, although you can fit your starter boards under architraves, subsequent rows will not go under architraves and click in place because you can't angle them sufficiently to click. Only a click system that works horizontally without needing angled insertion can go under architraves. I got round the problem by scribing and cutting a 1mm gap in the laminate boards around pre-prepared architraves and finishing 1mm gap with decorators caulk. (N.B. Prior to this, the base of the architrave was removed at 1-2 mm above finished floor level to allow for 10mm horizontal expansion gap for laminate edges. This is painstaking work and adds significantly to the time taken to finish the project.
There is a further manufacturing quality control problem with the click system with some packs of this product, because often the boards weren't perfectly straight, or had a 1-2mm variance in width end to end. Halfway through the room, the boards would not click together, no matter how I tried to re-jig. I tried several packs of boards and finally found that some worked. This wasted 2 days faffing about trying different remedies, because the fault is almost impossible to see with the naked eye. I eventually realised that it was the boards, not me and B&Q replaced the faulty boards with ones that work and I managed to finish the room.
So B&Q, for the sake of your loyal customers, please sort out the manufacturing problems to completely eliminate faulty boards and redesign the click system to one that will actually work horizontally and be durable. If you can match the functionality to the fabulous aesthetics, we will all be happy!
5 stars for aesthetics
2 stars for quality
1 star for ease of use
If the functionality was as good as the aesthetics, I would have given it 5 stars for value for money, instead of 2.

Had so much trouble trying to get the clock system to work but failed. We have 30 years of flooring experience between our fitters and in the end we removed it, returned it and bought the newlyn version and it went down in no time. We opened the box in store and tried a few boards together to make sure it clicked together.
