You probably won't have to use it very often but one time you do it is because you can't get your smoothing plane in and you can adjust the cut with ease and if you hit a knot the blade will not move like the others that you just tighten the thumb screw plus it has a lot more weight behind it and also has an adjustable mouth that makes it loads easier to clean the jammed up shavings from underneath the blade had mine about 30 years and it is still as good as new so yes I recommend this block plane, Paul (joiner wolves).
