Duncurin - 4 months ago

Duncurin is winding down at work and this was an ideal opportunity to restart my hobby of battleship building (plastic!). My wife calls them dust collectors so I decided to raise my game by routing my own bases from beautiful hardwoods such as oak and cherry.
I must confess that I am hopeless DIY-er and had never used a router before.
This is a fabulous offering from B&Q as it is good value and will also accept 1/4 and 1/2 inch bits which has been crucial as I have progressed.
It comes with excellent instructions and is also as befits a major retailer in the UK a safe one with good common-sense advice and suggestions for what if used carelessly could be a very dangerous product - especially for a newcomer like me.
In truth it came together very well and I started on some smooth straight edged but expendable bits of wood before I started on the oak! It's a powerful machine with lots of potential and works smoothly and in a fuss-free way. It's not unduly noisy although I always use eye and ear protection. Even so I had a morbid fear of actually looking at the bit as it revved away but the clear shield as well as the safety glasses of course helps with this and my confidence has grown.
The depth setting is also easy and permits quite fine adjustment and also reproducibility as one works on one battleship plinth but one needs to make sure that no stray steps and levels in one's work have opened up!
I tried employing the suction with an old cylinder hoover but in truth I prefer doing small runs at a time and cleaning up including the machine between runs. This saves weight and has made my efforts more nimble.
I love the slow start and also the power control which is perfect as one moves between soft and hardwoods for instance.
I bought a set of 1/4 inch router bits which were fine but as I got going more I moved up to the half inch ones which were superb, easy to add to the machine and gave for not a lot of money good results again with predictability and reproducibility as the key.
The parallel guide gave me a few headaches as I found I was constantly stopping and re-clamping my work which is not what one needs to do to get a good finish. I then found (ho hum) that I could actually turn it round and this allowed me to fix my clamps and get straight runs at one, then two and now three sides one after the other. I was loathe to desert the extra guidance of the parallel guide but I have now moved on to trusting the bits (and myself) with the little bearings at the bottom that mean one can dispense with the guide. This has created a better finish and a quicker one - with little sanding being needed.
All in all this is a perfect router for me and although I had not bought this B&Q own brand before I am glad I did - well done B&Q.

Let down by accuracy

Static - 7 months ago

On the face of it this product is pretty good value. It's got a lot of features and works OK. The problems arise when you want to use it for accurate work.

When you lock the depth it only locks one of the pillars and this leads to a considerable amount of play in the depth when you apply pressure. This can be reduced by locking the depth gauge down but was still unacceptable for me. Also, bearing down on it too hard caused the micro adjustment to slip, changing the depth of cut as you went.

Minor niggles: the collet nut was a bit sticky on mine and went tight before the bit was gripped. I had to keep tightening until it went loose again and then tight. The base was also easily marred in normal use. I'm going to take it back and try for a refund.

Good all rounder

I've had mine for a couple of years and been happy with it. Its easy to manoeuvre, takes both sizes most commonly used, is fairly quiet etc. Its recently developed a problem where I think I moved the fine height wheel too far one way and the base and motor have separated! Something is rattling around inside which I assume has broken so now if I let the depth lock off and full height, the base detaches from the motor.
Before this issue it was performing pretty well, not the smoothest plunge but adequate and very versatile features.

Love it but one thing missing

Had this router for about a month now and love it and all it’s features! The led work light is a god send. It performs everything I have asked and has plenty power for my tasks. Depth adjustment works great and is nice and smooth/comfortable to use. The only thing missing for me is a speed lock function which mean use with a universal router table isn’t possible, unless you cable tie the trigger or some similar diy solution!

Great piece of kit
