Drill buying guide

Drill buying guide

A power drill is an essential home improvement tool. They can bore holes, loosen or tighten screws and even chisel away materials. Combine this with the ability to use on a variety of materials, and you'll find that the right drill allows you to easily undertake multiple DIY tasks.

Our handy guide will explain everything you need to know about drills and will help you decide on the best one for you.

Man using a drill

Before you begin

What will you be using the drill for?

Do you need a drill for everyday household tasks like putting up shelves or hanging pictures? Or will it be used as part of a bigger renovation, and need to drill larger holes through bricks or masonry? Most drills have multiple functions, so even if you need a tool that could be used for both scenarios, we have one that could suit you – but knowing a bit about your plans will help narrow down the search.

Another consideration is the length of a particular task. The size and weight of a drill can affect how long you can spend working on your project – if the tool is heavy and bulky you’ll quickly tire of holding it. Make sure you pick a drill that is comfortable for you to handle and you’ll be able to keep working for longer.

Man using hammer drill

Will you need to move freely?

Some of our drill options will need to be plugged into the mains, and can therefore limit your movement. If you are going to use your drill all over your house, and even outside, you may wish to consider another option for your convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I bought this online to help me do some wooden flooring. I was very impressed with the smooth cuts , the three blades that came with it and the ease of using the laser line sight. I would reccomend this for diy use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A versatile and very useful piece of equipment Son is a bespoke carpenter and we bought him one of these for Xmas. Immediately he has to try it out for the possibilities he would use it for. Returning from his workshop after 20 or so minutes, he declared ‘fantastic, I’ll have plenty of uses for this, laser line is very helpful, and accurate, plunge feature great, powerful too’.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Could be better if people had 3 hands very difficult to switch on and hold while pushing down hard and push along, i found i had to use other hand to lift the base plate out of the way, however this dose put your hand very close to exposed blade. switch is too small to keep hold of. the spring on the base plate is to strong, and the wing screw to hold guide in place is to hard to tighten due to lack of space for fingers

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Returning it for a refund Very difficult to use especially when starting the cut. Got a couple of other builder mates to try it. They just laughed and handed it back. The laser isn't in line with the blade so following it would give disastrous results (it's not just slightly out of line it shines to the right 'alot'. All in all very disapointing taking It back for a refund tomorrow
