Interior paint buying guide

For a simple way to update a room, you can’t beat a lick of paint. Whether you’re putting your stamp on your new home, or are renovating a room that needs some TLC, interior paint can transform any space in the house in a few hours.

There are lots of paints available for different surfaces and it can be a bit daunting if you aren’t sure what all the different types, finishes and features mean. We are going to talk you through the ins and outs of interior paint so that you can buy the right paint with confidence.

Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just finished doing my garage! Just finished doing my garage floor with this paint, and I was very pleased with it. I didn't see the problem with the colour separating in the tin, as earlier customer feedback states below. The paint went on well, and covers easily, and I am very pleased with the finished texture. Would recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SHAKEN not stirred! Plenty of previous reviewers commenting on the inconsistency of the colour. I agree! However if found this is merely the separation of the paint due to storage. I had already given my tins a good shake (so I thought) and was disappointed in the dark-ish sky blue colour of the paint (not as shown on the tin) and non-matching colour of the other tin contents. I took them back to B&Q. They promptly put them in their paint shaker machine et voila! Steel Blue, both tins!! I would strongly suggest anyone purchasing the paint ask B&Q to shake it up before you leave the store! I've attached a picture. This is paint from the SAME tin. It's before and after photo - dark blue before I took the paint back to B&Q and (on the left) the light Steel Blue colour it's meant to be. Just a few pointers for readers:- My garage floor was 5 months old when I covered it, so it's had adequate time to cure (it takes months for a concrete floor to fully cure). Day 1, I swept it, hoovered it and washed it down. I then use a masonry cleaner. Day 2, two coats of concrete sealer were applied Day 3, first coat of the Ronseal paint. Day 4, 2nd coat. Day 5, 3rd coat on paint (The tin say's minimum 2 coats!!) I then gave it a week to dry before putting anything in the garage. I've had no problems what so ever with paint lifting or chipping off. Tyres contain plasticiser and it is this that will lift off any paint that isn't fully cured. Also, you cannot put hot tyres on a painted garage floor, its guarantee to lift the paint off - again it's the plasticiser in the tyre. Go to JTF and buy the click-together flooring put your vehicle on that (I do!) The soles of your rubber shoes also contain plasticiser... so for those chaps that love their garage, buy some garage slippers ;)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from What it says on the tin Bought this to re-cover the painted garage floor. Three coats. Easy to apply, good coverage, simple to clean brushes and rollers. Not sure how hard wearing it will be though. Bits already flaking off after a month.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but beware of colour matching I purchased this product after researching for a product that would be hard wearing. I have a double garage and therefore would need 2 tins, getting the third free also gave me assurance if my calculations were incorrect. I painted the garage in 2 halfs (moving stuff over to one half, and then over to the other when doing the other). Being too gung-ho and ignoring a previous post I simply opened the tins one at a time, I would recommend mixing the tins for reasons that became apparent.. The 1st tin gave 3 coats, the paint was applied to a bare concrete floor, therefore as this was porous I followed the instructions and diluted the first coat with 10% water. I left each coat for 2 hours before applying the next, after the first coat the paint went on very quickly and easily. the first tin covered one half of the garage with 3 coats and the second half with one. This is the point I dropped a star from the rating. I would have gave 5, but for the inconsistency between tins. The 1st tin gave a pale blue colour, the 2nd a darker blue, and this is blatantly different, as is a garage i am not overly bothered but others may be, so beware. The Good: Purchased in 3 for 2 deal. Achieved good coverage. Quick to apply, especially after the first coat Fast Drying Bad: 2 noticeably different shades of blue from 2 different tins.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but Watch the colour Very good, easy to apply and dries fast. Only issue was we had two tins and there were different shades. Left the floor two tone. If using more than one tin I would either mix together first or make sure one is enough for a whole coat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Easy to apply, great finish and comfortably enough to apply two coats
Date published: 2011-04-30
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good finish but poor coverage This 5L tin is meant to give 60 sq meters of coverage but even when I diluted it as specified for the first coat I only got around 20 sq meters.
