Product details
Product information
This Base 4 satin metal & wood paint has been specially designed to give a durable and long-lasting finish on a range of surfaces. Simply apply with a brush or roller and leave for 1 hour to dry - a great way to give the surfaces additional protection. Covers 10m² per litre on average.
- Suitable for Metal & wood
- Surface Preparation - The surface must be clean, dry and free of dust and grease. Glossy surfaces should be sanded before painting. Repair all damaged areas. Remove old, loose or flaky paint. Cover the surrounding area whilst decorating to provide protection against paint spills. For best results, seal new and bare wood surfaces with Valspar Interior Primer & Undercoat. Fresh plaster and absorbent surfaces must be sealed with primer or a first coat of this product prior to applying the finishing coat.
- For outdoor use only. Do not apply in damp or humid conditions. Apply when the temperature of the surface being painted is above 10 °C. Stir contents thoroughly to ensure paint is thoroughly mixed. Purchase enough paint to complete the job. When purchasing more than 1 container of the same colour, intermix containers to ensure colour uniformity. If you feel that you may run out of paint, stop at a corner or a natural break. Apply 1–2 coats using a suitable brush or professional spray equipment. When spraying, always back-brush immediately. Apply liberally, working from dry areas into the paint’s wet edge and finish with gentle, vertical strokes. Avoid excessive brushing. Extra coats may be required when making dramatic colour changes. Do not thin this product. Dries to the touch in about an hour under normal conditions. Allow 2–4 hours between coats.

Ignore the other reviews - 10/10 quality
Christ - the reviews are definitely from DIYers who don’t know how to paint - when to paint - or how to prep. This paint has NEVER failed and I prep my wood to ensure it’s absolutely clean, dust and particle clean and dry. I also look at the forecast to make sure it’s got more than adequate time to dry. Come on, it’s paint - it’s not going to do as all the reviews are showing. Highly recommend this paint and the whole of Valspar!!!! Always used Valspar in my own home interior and exterior - friends family and customers… NEVER had an issue.

At first fantastic, but now unfortunately flaking
We bought 5 2.5l tins of this paint and had it colour matched to our windows, to use to paint all our fachia boards, picket fencing, garage doors and planters with to achieve our vision for our home. When it was first completed we were so excited, it turned out amazing! Fast forward three years later, we’d noticed some bits were flaking badly on our garage doors and picket fence and I thought oh maybe they just need touching up. Fast forward another 2 years, and the paint is flaking horrendously, to the point where we are going to need to get the professional's out again to redo the whole lot. It’s really disappointing when we believed they would have lasted for years, and slowly they’ve been peeling and flaking away probably from 12-18 months after the first application. Really disappointed and now at a loss as to what to do next to rectify the problem.

Avoid at all costs!!
Absolutely rubbish! Am on my 5th, yes, 5th coat and it still looks like the first coat (can’t seem to add photo but trust me, it’s bad ☹️) I spent a long time priming, undercoating and sanding this door and now I wish I’d just left it as grey primer! Waste of 5 days; very disappointed as have been happy with all other valspar paints -this product seriously lets the range down 👎👎👎

Thin and watery :(
Very thin watery consistency. Needs at least 3 coats when a normal exterior paint (like Weathersh1eld) would only require two. Very poor effort compared to the Valspar interior range.

Poor coverage reqires lots of coats
I bought this paint for my exterior doors. I am pleased with the dark green colour and because I have removed the doors and painted them on a flat surface in my workshop the thinness of the paint is not a problem and if anything made it easy to use. I imagine though, a very high level of care would be required with the door in situ especially as it says use liberally so I reckon there would be a lot of runs. However, My complaint is about coverage and finish. I spent a lot of time preparing the door. First I pressure washed. Then when dry I machine sanded. Then I filled with Ronseal high performance wood filler and then more sanding by hand. I used Dulux primer undercoat on patches of bare wood and on the filler. I have now painted 4 coats of Valspar and like others am finding the finish patchy and a mixture of high gloss and quite dull finish when dry. Even more frustrating I am still getting patches of the primer undercoat coming through. I have used Valspar paint many times and always been happy but this time I wish I hadn't bothered and would not recommend it. My suspicion is that it doesnt like going over Dulux formula primer undercoat.

Never will I buy this again !
I searched for this colour pink and thought great valspar can mix it ! Great colour …worst paint I’ve ever used it’s thin , it’s not exterior satin it’s more like emulsion . All prepping done , for what I paid for it I can honestly say I’ve totally wasted my money & have the hard work of prob sanding it all off again , not that it will take long as it’s so thin !

Don't buy this paint
I am a professional painter & decorator. This is not good gloss paint. It dries far too quickly so that brush marks show. If you brush in both directions the paint drags. The finish is much less glossy than other gloss paints.

Not nearly as good as the interior paint
I have used Valspar paint throughout the interior of the house and found it to be excellent, so purchased the exterior wood paint to paint the windows so they would match the interior frames colour, unfortunately the exterior paint is extremely runny and forms into large blobs spoiling the finish, the primer looked smoother than the paint. I still have a front door to paint but will be using another brand , even though I wanted to use a Valspar colour. I will not be using the exterior paint again and would not recommend anyone else to do so.!

Worse paint I’ve ever used
Having been impressed with Valspar interior washable Matt, I’m very disappointed with this exterior paint. Used on an external door which I prepared and undercoated thoroughly, I’m currently on 4th coat of this rubbish and looks like I’ll need at least 2 more coats to get any kind of decent finish - 1 litre won’t be enough to finish the door both sides and taking forever! Says to apply liberally and not over-brush, but it doesn’t grip so you have to keep brushing to get rid of the patchy bubble marks. Not happy.

Great paint
I used this gloss paint on beach front exterior doors and found it to be excellent in cover, application and appearance and after 2 years they still look very good.
