Product information

The heavily scented flowers of Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ are produced in the depths of winter at a time where colour in the garden can be a rarity, making this hardy, deciduous shrub a real treat. The blooms begin a wonderful dark pink shade and gradually transform to white before being replaced by purple berries that are small and rounded in the summer months. During the autumn months, the green foliage that is held on bare, woody stems undergoes a transformation from green to bright orange and yellow. This popular garden plant, winner of an RHS Award of Garden Merit, has an exceptionally long season of interest that stretches from winter to autumn making it an ideal choice for prominent borders and wildlife gardens. Viburnum plants should be watered well throughout the growing season until the young plants have fully established themselves. Choose a sunny or semi-shaded position in a moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Before planting, add plenty of garden compost or well-rotted manure into the soil and plant the shrub at the same depth it occupied in its pot. Be sure to backfill the planting hole and water well to ensure that the soil settles. Viburnum plants require little pruning, but after flowering stems should be cut back to a healthy bud. Reduce any stems that ruin the symmetry of the plant. Position: sun or semi shade Height: up to 300cm (118in) Spread: up to 200cm (79in) Supplied as 3 x 9cm nursery pot Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary results. Image may be included for illustration of supply, but can vary due to seasonality changes (e.g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).

    • Grow Viburnum plants in a sunny or semi shaded position, in a moderately fertile, well drained soil. To reduce the risk of frost damage to its winter blooms, plant your Viburnum in a sheltered area, close to an entrance way or path, so the fragrance can be enjoyed.
    • In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Viburnum requires little pruning. After flowering, simply cut back stems to a healthy bud and reduce any stems that spoil the symmetry of the plant. Caution: harmful if eaten.
