I bought four lengths of upstand two weeks ago to finish off my kitchen refurbishment. Having now completed the job, the upstands look great and really complement and improve the look of the worktops onto which they're fitted. However, fitting was another story. Despite storing the upstands flat on the floor for two weeks, when cut to the required length they all tended to warp outwards on each end for the final foot (30 cm)or so. I found the only way to effectively fix them to the wall therefore was as follows:
1. having cut the upstand to required length, lay it flat on the floor and apply two continuous beads of' No Nails' or similar instant grab mastic along the entire length of the lower and upper back of the upstand (ie the surface to be fitted against the wall), then a bead of clear silicone mastic along the bottom of it (ie the surface that will be in contact with the worktop).
2. Immediately place the section into position, pressing it firmly both against the wall and down onto the worktop at the same time. Working along it's entire length, ensure that you get as close and tight a fix as possible but, however good and level your wall surface is, you'll find it coming away in places and at one or both ends.
3. To overcome this problem, I pushed the upstand hard against the wall in those sections that were loose, and then pushed a stack of heavy books against it to hold it in place. On the ends where the worktop was open ended, I placed a small G clamp onto the worktop (using the slight overhang) with it tight up against the upstand ( I used a piece of cardboard too between g clamp and worktop/upstand to ensure a tight fit and to avoid possible damage to surfaces by the clamp). Behind the sink, I used a piece of wood and some spacers jammed tightly between the sink unit back edge and the upstand to force it tight to the wall
4. On corners, where you have cut a 45 degree mitre in the upstands in order to join two pieces, you'll find that the two adjoining sections tend to hold themselves in place on the ends so try to fit two or more sections at a time (as per stages 1 and 2 above) as the mastic beads will stay workable on the back/bottom of the upstand for at least 10-15 minutes).
5. Leave all clamps and weights in places for at least three hours to allow the mastic to set and hey presto you're done. Finally, run a very narrow bead of clear mastic between worktop and upstand joints, along the entire length and smooth off gently with a wet finger for a permanent waterproof seal. I can supply photos of my finished results if required.
