- Choose a location with full sun exposure. Dig a hole wide and deep enough to accommodate the root ball. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with a mixture of the original soil and compost, firming gently around the base. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous new growth.
