How to guides

How to hang wallpaper

How to hang wallpaper

Wallpaper adds a stunning finish to the walls of any room, whether it’s a bold, colourful patterned wallpaper or a subtle, neutral wallpaper. With wallpaper comes the flexibility of wallpapering a whole room or an individual feature wall.

Our extensive range of wallpaper offers a variety of colours, patterns and textures. Choose from styles including floral, geometric, metallic, natural and vintage. Our buyer's guide helps you choose the perfect wallpaper for your room to create the look that you’ll love.

Read our Buyer's guide to wallpaper

In this guide we’ll walk you through how to:

  • Measure and cut wallpaper to the correct lengths
  • Apply adhesive to the wallpaper
  • Hang the lengths to achieve a straight and smooth finish, on walls and around corners and stairwells
  • Tackle awkward areas like radiators, windows, light switches, plug sockets and door frames
  • Hang wallpaper to create a feature wall

For this project we’ll be using paste the paper wallpaper, which needs to have adhesive applied to the back of it before hanging. The alternatives are paste the wall paper, which means that you apply the wallpaper adhesive to the wall instead of the paper, and self-adhesive wallpaper. For pasting the wall we recommend applying the adhesive with a roller.

Buying guides

Wallpapering tools buying guide

Wallpapering tools buying guide

Wallpapering can sometimes be a more complex task than you might imagine, but having all the right tools will make it far simpler and the result much neater.

Types of tools

Paste brush

You can use any 100mm or 125mm paintbrush to apply paste, but a paste brush has a thicker wedge of soft bristles, which makes it easier to use.

Paper-hanging scissors

These scissors have extra-long blades that make it easier to cut your wallpaper in straight lines.

Wallpaper table (pasting table)

Higher than a kitchen table and just wider than a roll of wallpaper, this lightweight folding platform is perfect for measuring, cutting and pasting paper. W-leg tables are more stable than cheaper versions, but plastic ones are the sturdiest of all - as well as being the simplest to clean and store.

Plumb line/chalk line

Want to make sure you hang your wallpaper straight? Use a plumb line (a weight on the end of a string) to get a perfectly straight vertical line. And if you need to draw a straight edge on most surfaces, snap a chalk line.

Wallpaper scorer

When you soak wallpaper to prepare it for stripping, score the surface first with a rotary scorer as it helps the water to penetrate. Then just use a scraper to lift the paper off the wall.

Paper-hanging brush

The soft bristles on this brush are designed to smooth wallpaper by squeezing out any air bubbles and excess paste. Wash the bristles in warm water when you've finished to keep it fresh and usable.

Wallpaper steamer

Steaming is the fastest way to strip wallpaper. It makes good sense to buy a steamer when you have a lot of paper to strip, or need to do the job quickly.

Seam roller

Smooth the seams between lengths of wallpaper with this tiny roller - but make sure not to use it on embossed or fragile papers.

Combination smoother/cutter

After you've smoothed your wallpaper in place, simply cut around any obstructions with the retractable snap-off blade. But don't press too hard on fragile papers, or they might tear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic wallpaper!!!! I was really hesitant to buy this paper after the reviews but it was by far he best match for my feature wall so I decided to risk it and am so please I did. I lined with 1200 grade lining paper to be on the safe side and it is no see through at all. Of the three wallpapers used in my living room, our decorator commented on how fantastic this one was, really easy to put up and really resistant to be crumpled or teared. It also did a good job of hiding the damage on the walls. I could not recommend it highly enough!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to work with We bought this to do our hall, stairs and landing. It's a dark space so needed something light. Really pleased with the results. The colour and texture looks higher quality than the cost and it was a tricky area to do but the paper was very easy to work with. I pasted the paper not the wall as I am more comfortable with this method and this worked fine. I have wallpapered many times but found this to be one of the stronger quality papers. Not sure about the other comments about it being see through as the walls were previously white anyway. Would buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it We lined the walls with 800 grade paper. Then we pasted the paper - not wall. Went on a dream & result so good we are having it in another room. We are very fussy - but also put a lot of prep in, to ensure good results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Paper We have used this paper in a hall and in a spare bedroom, We used this shade in the hall on the stairs and combined it with the brown version at the top and bottom. The spare bedroom was combined with a feature wall. It was easy to put on and cut and we pasted on the table not the wall. I would never attempt to paper unlined or previously papered walls as you are guaranteed to see the under colours with papers below the £25.00 a roll mark. I use wallrock fibre-liner on all my walls as i had a older house when using this paper. The finish was excellent and helped sell the property. I am now in my new property and about to start decorating. We will be using this paper again in the stone, brown and more than likely grey within the house. As with all papering, taking your time and doing the prep will give you the best results. If you are unwilling to strip existing paper line it first with a good quality lining paper.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from looks like lining paper i previously bought wallpaper from the unity range which was fantastic, but although this paper was easy to work with, the colour looks like lining paper, and i was very disappointed. Wish id of chosen a different colour and not the limestone

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality Very dissapointed we were able to see the darker paint underneath.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy - had to take it all off and repaper We bought this paper to go on newly skimmed walls. When it went up, it was so thin you could see the overlap paint from coving to plaster through the paper. It looked so bad we had to pull it off, buy different paper and start again.
