I bought these as I needed an IP65 downlight that allowed me to change the bulb for a dimmer one than that which is supplied with the lights. Unfortunately it is the ability to change the bulb that is the problem.

To change the bulb you have to remove the entire front part of the light, which leaves the black back part in the ceiling. As these lights are IP65 rated there is a thick rubber gasket between the front and back parts, and also between the back part and the ceiling. The front part is a ¼ twist “bayonette” type and because of the gasket is very stiff.

Firstly, the rubber gasket holds the decorative part of the light slightly away from the ceiling, so you can see the black part behind it, which makes it look very “not flush”. Secondly, the clips which hold the light into the ceiling are far too weak, and the grip between the front and back parts is too stiff, so when you try to remove or re-attach the front part to change the bulb, the whole light twists in the ceiling. In my case one of the clips would eventually hit a rafter which stopped the whole light turning and only then would the front part come loose. Replacing the front part is even harder as there are no visual cues to pre-align the bayonette, so you usually have to have several attempts, each of which twists the light more and more in the ceiling. It did this even though I cut the hole slightly undersize. The instructions tell you to cut a 71mm hole, but then later on recommend to cut a smaller hole and then file it out until the light just fits.

To cap it all, each time the light spins in the hole it damages the ceiling until eventually you can see the damage beyond the decorative front piece.

Finally, as the bulb is very recessed inside the housing, the depth of the light within the ceiling space is very deep compared to other models.

I have only owned these lights a few days and have already had to repaint around one of them due to the damage caused by removing the front to change the bulb for a dimmer one, which means I have now got paint on part of the light. Despite this I am going to try to return them as not fit for purpose because of the issues with changing the bulbs.

    Lovely even light

We bought these three weeks ago and our builder has now put them up and they are far better than I expected....really good light, even and no shadow.
