Interior paint buying guide

For a simple way to update a room, you can’t beat a lick of paint. Whether you’re putting your stamp on your new home, or are renovating a room that needs some TLC, interior paint can transform any space in the house in a few hours.

Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this paint Bought this over the Easter holiday absolutely love it goes on brilliantly

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Quality Serviceable Paint Dulux Easycare Timeless Matt Emulsion paint provides good coverage providing the surface is properly prepared. I used it to repaint a bedroom which had been partially damaged by water ingress. The damaged ceiling had been repaired and the damaged area had dried out. I first used a pure white water damage blocker to treat the stained area. Once that had been allowed to dry, the paint covered well although it did take two coats. It is expensive compared to alternatives and it has been only a few weeks since I used it. Time will tell if the serviceability features of the Easycare paint were worth paying for.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too white to be called anything else The label on the tin shows a slightly cream finish , but when painted is hard to distinguish from the white ceiling......no going to use almond The paint quality was exceptional, virtually non drip, just the colour : or lack of it, was the problem

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nothing EASY about this paint ! Just tried this paint out on my bedroom ....5 ltrs later needed more paint ! It has no coverage and has taken 3 coats to cover my walls which had a very pale colour on to start with .......Definitely wont be buying again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from bad coverage I used this paint 2weeks ago, code I can't get endurance. Its not as thick . & takes more paint to get the job done. Unless ur willing to paint the walls white be for you use this paint. I would not recommend. Bring back endurance.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from don't buy!!!!! I bought 10L of easycare paint for hallway, stairs & vestibule got as far as the cutting in and stopped as I thought the paint was faulty! Decided to check some reviews online only to find I was not alone in struggling with this paint. The main problem is the speed it cures, it's workable for about 1 minute then any 2nd brush stroke and your finish is ruined. I returned it for the same colour in the standard Dulux range, a lot easier to use and cheaper.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible finish and difficult to use I needed a water resistant paint to protect an area in the bathroom that often gets splashed with water, so I thought a paint such as this and it being Dulux would fit the bill. Unfortunately this paint is terrible to use!! If you have ever used ‘Stain Stop’ paint you will know what I mean. This Dulux paint appears to contain rubber of some sort, which is great for toughness and water repellency, but downright awful to paint with. Regular paint glides as you repeatedly brush over an area, this paint drags! After about thirty seconds of coating a surface with one stroke (paintbrush), the paint starts to go off and when you go to take another stroke over the same area, it pulls at the paint already laid down. Trying to remedy this only makes it even worse and you end up with what I can only describe as looking like paint dunes. I had to scrape off an area of paint when I discovered this and start again. I haven’t tried this with a roller, but I have read other reviews elsewhere where some people have said applying a second coat has caused the first to peel off. I’m sure you could get better results with practice, but I have painted two rooms with regular emulsion paint and got a beautiful finish, but this paint is horrendous to use. If you do buy it, I definitely recommend you water it down with probably 10-20 percent water if you want a fighting chance at using it and getting an acceptable finish.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extremely hard to paint with! I bought this paint to paint my hallway and landing, but it was so hard to paint onto the walls due to it turning into plastic when you paint it on and you cannot go over the same bit as it wipes off everything you have just painted. We painted over another light colour and had to give it 3 coats to cover it. Very very poor and definitely will not be buying it again.
