We used nitromores years ago when we last wanted to strip paint from banisters etc. This time it seems much less powerful, so we resorted to the heat gun. Unfortunately it has left a green residue on the wood which is now a problem in itself to remove! I would not recommend it.
Absolutely useless on varnish

I bought this to strip some varnish off a bedside table before painting it. It had virtually nil effect despite using it twice and following the instructions carefully.
Can't comment about how good it is on paint, but for varnish, don't bother.
off to look at some 'liquid sanders' instead, or it may just have to be good old-fashioned elbow grease and sandpaper...

I bought this to remove paint from painted kitchen tiles- within 30 seconds of applying it the paint blistered and was easily removed. A couple of areas needed a second application, but paint came away with a bit of elbow grease. Sadly the grout was not so successful and I ended up regrouting to cover up the paint still visible in the grout lines

It seems you need quite a lot to strip paint.
