Interior paint buying guide

For a simple way to update a room, you can’t beat a lick of paint. Whether you’re putting your stamp on your new home, or are renovating a room that needs some TLC, interior paint can transform any space in the house in a few hours.

Questions to ask before you begin

Which room in the house are you painting?

What goes on in the room you are planning to paint? Maybe you are painting a kitchen or bathroom that would benefit from a moisture-resistant paint. Some rooms might need an extra hard-wearing paint which can be wiped down and cleaned such as hallways, landings or kid’s bedrooms. Finding the right paint isn’t just about which colour you pick. We have different types of paint designed for use in different rooms. By choosing the paint that is specially designed for the type of room you are painting, you will get the best end result.

What type of surface are you painting?

There are different types of paint for different surface materials. As well as a comprehensive selection of emulsion paints for walls and ceilings, we have a wide range of specialist paint including ones that are designed for wood furniture, brick walls, and tiles. Choosing the right paint for the right material will ensure a longer-lasting result and the best coverage.

What kind of look are you going for?

Maybe your home has quite a traditional look and would suit a subtle, matt effect paint. Or perhaps you have a more contemporary style that would look great with a satin or metallic finish paint. When selecting paint, think about what you want the final look to be, so that you can choose the correct finish as well as the right colour.

How much time do you have to complete your decorating project?

If you need to get your painting job done quickly, we have a wide range of quick-drying options that will help you get a whole room decorated in a few hours. We have quick dry wall paint, primers, and wood and metal paint to help you make the most of your time whatever you are painting.

What state is the surface in?

Some of our interior paints can be applied directly to the surface. Others may require a bit of preparation before you can begin painting. Perhaps you are painting a freshly plastered surface or previously untreated wood, or maybe you need to fill in some holes or sand down an uneven surface. We have paints and primers for all sorts of surfaces that will help you achieve a nice, even finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Did the whole kitchen with one tin Having read quite a few reviews on cupboard paints I took my chance on this one... I removed the doors and handles, cleaned thoroughly, then sanded back. I covered the floor with paper and laid out all the doors flat on the floor. You have to work quickly with this paint as it's gloss but I found that one coat did the job. I was a little cautious with the first door I painted and subsequently this was the only one that needed a touch up the next day. There's definitely a fine line between getting a good coverage and putting too much on! I've only got a small and very dated kitchen that we will eventually change, but for £22 I'm really happy with how it looks. One tin did the lot, including inside the melamin cupboards where I've permanently removed the doors and the kick boards. I've had so many compliments and some people asked if it was a new kitchen! The only thing I would say is you really don't need to sand very much, just a light sanding to make sure they're clean. You can see the marks where I sanded vigourously on one of the cupboards but nobody else seems to notice except me. The whole thing took me roughly a day (an afternoon prepping and painting, then the following morning putting everything back) and the fiddliest part was putting the handles back on, I'd recommend writing down where everything goes!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant to use This is a great product that does what it says on the tin. As long as you do all the prep work properly you get a great finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Totally impressed Absolutely love this product. The colour is true to photo and tin, easy application with sponge roller dries like enamel. Used on lower cupboards one tin did x2 standard doors, x3 drawer fronts and some casing and shelving there is some left for three small kickboards.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from fab product looks more slate blue than cobolt grey but in my opinion its nicer than the sample pic on site. My kitchen looks fabulous, one tin did the whole job 2 coats, first coat with a brush, second with a mini roller. Goes on like a dream and dries super fast. downside is the smell, which will linger for couple of days. Some of the reviews talk about it looking streaky and not applying correctly! thats rubbish! if you clean and sand correctly it applies perfectly. Preparation is key!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Update for tired cupboard Having done my research, I went for Ronseal cupboard paint. After reading a few reviews I'd already made up my mind to apply with a roller to get the smoothest finish. If you're ready reviews that says that the paint is too thick and gloopy, I'd say it's thick like a typical gloss or bathroom/ kitchen paint, if you treat it the same you'll be fine. I'd recently found out that the previous owner of my house had painted standard kitchen cupboards in white emulsion (!) so they looked tired and dirty, so cleaning them was a bit of a drawn out process. I'm so pleased with the finish. It looks clean and modern and I'll get a few more years use of of them. It was two coats to get a good finish but then I applied with a roller. I'm not the most diligent cleaner of my paint stuff, if you're the same as me I'd recommend roller tray inserts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very happy! My kitchen cabinets were white and old fashioned, not being able to afford a new kitchen, my husband and I wanted to make the most of what we had so we decided to paint the cupboards. The paint is a little tricky to use as it is quite thick, hence the 4 stars. Its so much better if you can take the cupboard doors off otherwise there will be drip marks, but its not the end of the world either. I used a fine finish paint brush to paint my cupboards and it worked really well. I was quite worried if the paint would work on our cupboards as they are a very glossy plastic finish, but I did what I was supposed to do cleaning and sanding and it went on no problems. Very nice colour, it is slightly bluey, but I love it - much more our style! Just need to replace the kitchen handles now!!
