Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish Dark oak Satin Wood Floor Varnish, 2.5L
Product details
Product information
This dark oak floor varnish from the Ronseal Diamond range can be applied to your interior using a brush. The varnish dries in just 30 minutes and will cover up to 18 m² per litre on average.
- Gives floors Diamond Hard protection from shoes, scratches and spills, while highlighting the natural beauty of the wood.
- Surface Preparation - Make sure the room is warmer than 10 degrees, remove your furniture and open the doors and windows. Wear a mask when sanding the floors to avoid inhaling dust. How to prepare unvarnished floors: Prepping before varnishing will help the varnish stick evenly and give you better results. Sand along the length of your floorboards with 120 grit sandpaper. (Helpful hint: It’s quicker and easier to use a floor sander). Let the dust settle and run the vacuum around before wiping the floor down with white spirit. If you spot any holes or imperfections, use our Multi-purpose Wood Filler to fill them in. How to prepare varnished floors: Lightly sand your floor with 120 grit sandpaper. If your old varnish is flaking off, use a floor sander to sand back to the bare wood. Let the dust settle, vacuum it up and then wipe down your floor with white spirit.
- Instructions for Use - Give the varnish a really good stir and test the colour on a small patch to make sure you’re happy with it. Use a 4” brush and start in the corner furthest from the door. Work along the length of two floorboards at a time, just make sure you don’t get trapped in the corner! Wait two hours for the first coat to dry before applying another. For the best protection, you’ll need three coats. Before you start the third coat, very lightly sand along the length of your floorboards with 240 grit sandpaper. You won’t need a floor sander for this bit. Wipe the floor down with a damp cloth and then apply the third coat. Your floor will be ready to walk on in only two hours. Wait 24 hours before bringing your furniture back in. After 72 hours your floor will be diamond hard.

Difficult to apply without leaving streaks
It seems quite a good product, but I found application quite hard. I had to rush with applying it to avoid leaving streaks. Feathering didn't quite work as expected and I had to sand between coats, which was quite tiresome on a whole room. It scratches in some places when moving boxes and furniture, but I only waited for 3days to cure before having to move in.

Neither ‘diamond hard’ nor durable
This floor varnish is neither diamond hard nor durable. It started coming off in light traffic areas in under a year. This photo was taken four years later. By paying twice the price of other varnishes I was disappointed that it wasn’t hard wearing longevity.

Awful durability - avoid
I put this product down around 18 months ago, and it has basically all come off in higher traffic areas, and mostly come off in light traffic areas. It is not 'diamond hard', it is a load of rubbish. It goes on well, although I do agree with another review that the colour is more greeny than rich brown, although a few more coats would provably sort that. I am now in a position where I have to either live with it or strip the boards completely back and finish again.

Recovers well on existing floorboards
Excellent coverage drying quickly. When applying gives a blueish hue so you know where you have covered which disappeared when dry.

Nice natural looking stain
I bought the medium oak to stain new pine floorboards which turned them orange so bought this to try over the top to redeem the colour a little. It definitely helped take some of the orange out of it. I then used this by itself to stain a few pieces for windowsills and it looks lovely - wish I had done the whole floor with it. On the pine it looks quite close to the colour on the tin swatch - just a little more natural and not as orangey. It's really easy to apply and dries pretty quickly. Only complaint is that some patches on the floor that get wet where we put our shoes has already started to rub off after just 8 months and we applied 3 coats...Will probably look for a different brand next time.

Good colour
The colour came out good and I was pleased with it, unfortunately, this product scratches easily! It scratched straight away and even after being down for weeks now it still scratches easily, disappointed with that as I put a lot of effort in to preparing the floor beforehand. For application I recommend you use a brush and roller as stated on the tin, I used a paint pad and have a few Brush (pad) marks in places.

Great to work with
I wanted a dark floor but not too dark, so I went for the dark oak. I was tempted for the Walnut but didn’t want a red tone to it. I’m over the moon with it now. I just hope it holds up on the 1930’s sanded pine boards I have. I did 6 coats as I wanted it darker. It’s a little too yellowy brown on the first few coats. Over the moon with it now! I bought an old tub which had the pad within (very very useful) and a new tin can of this. The old tub was a slightly different colour. Seems the new tin has a more warmer redder tone to it, which turned out great. Remember to keep the surface spotless in between coats, as once any dust gets on it it’ll leave marks.

Colour not what it says on the tin!
When applied this came out a murky greeny yellowy brown. Very unpleasant colour and wouldn't ever describe it as dark oak. B&Q very helpful though in exchanging for walnut which was much truer to the colour description.

The perfect job
Having opened the tin, I was a little worried about the colour of the liquid but, once it slid onto the newly prepared floorboards it was perfect. Also concerned about getting an even colour, I found that it went on smoothly and very evenly, having followed the instrucitons that is, I find that always a good idea! So far ( 3 weeks) the surface has been unmarked although I did drop a piece of granate fireplace on the floor (oops) and it dug in but, topping up the damaged spot, no-one would ever know. Seems to be set for the long haul. Very pleased with the finish and colour and would use the same range again with no hesitation at all.
