Coverage is ok. On dark furniture do be generous with the paint otherwise the background will show through. Not as good a finish as another well known brand but much cheaper.

Not impressed

Paint would not go on evenly at all! Dried out far to quickly and left uneven finish. I have used different colours of this paint before with excellent results so don’t know if it’s colour or just bad batch.

I purchased this paint last week, to upcycle some laminate/veneer furniture, that had water damage from a few spills over the years: it was also looking drab and needed a new lease of life. I'm very pleased that I went ahead and bought the paint, as I’m very happy with how my pieces turned out.

The chalk paint is a very viscous paint and it seems to get thicker the longer the tin is left open and uncovered. I also found that when left uncovered, the paint seemed to develop dried bits of paint, that would come off onto the furniture. So covering the tin when you are painting, is a good idea. As the paint is thick, it does need to be applied quickly, with a quality gloss roller, as it drys super fast and I found an even finish, was difficult to achieve with a brush alone, since the paint was too thick to move around evenly.

When using this paint on veneer/laminate, just wash the furniture you are painting with a damp cloth, leave it dry thoroughly and then apply your first coat - leave 2-3 hours between each coat; this will give the laminate time to dry and prevent bubbling in the finish. I also wouldn’t recommend sanding the piece you are painting, beforehand, as you run the risk of the laminate bubbling from too much moisture getting into the material.

You also don’t need to prime when using this paint. However, if you prefer to use less chalk paint, then applying two coats of primer beforehand would help with that. I didn’t prepare any of my furniture and managed to paint a bedside table and sideboard with 4 coats of paint each and still have 1/3 of the tin leftover for another project – a little goes a long way. I haven’t yet sealed the finished furniture, as I haven’t found a finisher that doesn’t turn the white, yellow/darker and both pieces are holding up to daily use quite well, thus far.

Overall, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase this paint again for any future upcycles and for £12 a tin, it’s not exactly breaking the bank, when you think about how much you would have spent replacing the furniture! ;)

Thoroughly disappointed with this product

Even with numerous coats (over 5) on pine furniture I am finding this product impossible to get a good finish with. I bought two colours and the finishing wax costing ~£35 so a very costly mistake.

The paint does not dry to an even finish, the coverage is nowhere near that which is advertised and when applied thick drying time is hours. Any attempts to paint over layers which are not completely dry will result in the paint lifting away from the surface!

I would not recommend this product to anyone.

The best thing about chalk paint is the minimal prep needed before application. This version does not live up to that and the finish looks bad unless there is all the regular sanding between coats.
