How to build a basic, ground-level deck

How to build a basic, ground-level deck

A simple deck at ground level is a straightforward project – a perfect starting point if you're new to carpentry.

Before you start laying, check out our guide to planning your decking project. This covers everything from decking structures to board designs, and offers an essential introduction.

Read How to plan your decking

Our example is of decking that is:

  • Laid on flat, soft and level ground
  • Laid on the ground floor, not raised
  • Not joined to a building
  • Without any extra touches like a balustrade or decking lights
  • Designed with the boards in a horizontal pattern

If you plan to lay decking that's raised, adjacent to a building or wall, or would like to add a balustrade, head over to our article on laying a raised deck for more information.

Decking buying guide

Attractive and practical, decking is a great landscaping option for outdoor spaces of any size. It creates additional living space, distinguishing a special spot for socialising or relaxing. Decked areas help make the most of surfaces that are uneven or sloped so that no garden space is wasted, and work well as elevated terraces to offer garden interest at different heights.

Decking is ideal for zoning in large gardens as well as smaller spaces, such as balconies and roof terraces, where it can create the feel of an outdoor oasis in the midst of the city. Decking complements modern styles, as well as more rural or country gardens. And the natural feel of timber evokes the sensation of being waterside or by the beach - perfect for that American boardwalk look. In fact, if you have, or are looking to add, a hot tub or swimming pool to your garden, consider laying a decked border around it - we offer low-slip boards which are ideal for this very purpose.

So, whether you're tackling a small-scale decking project or something more substantial, we're here to help you find the right decking for you and your outdoor space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decking joists.2400mm x 70mm x 43mm Good straight timber, perfect for the job. A couple of small splits at the end of two but the other 13 were perfect. Would buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product Nice and solid, without twist, easy to use. Emanantly fine for my ground level deck and probably other garden jobs as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheap and durable I built a ground-level deck with these four years ago, and it's still going strong, with no signs of splitting or rotting (make sure you treat any cut edges though). OK, I had to use a smaller spacing than I probably would have with sturdier wood, but these are a fraction of the cost of most joists, so the deck still worked out considerably cheaper. They're a useful size for lots of other garden DIY tasks too, so I tend to keep a supply of these in my garage for use on other projects. As others have said, quality can be variable, so pick them out in person rather than ordering online.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy, but would buy in store. Having read reviews, we decided to collect our joists rather than hope for the best with delivered ones. I sorted though the rack to find ones that were not warped or split so obviously I was happy. All fitted at 600mm spacing and the deck is solid. Only 4 stars as I had to sort through to find the good ones.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent cheap joist Seems a decent cheap joist. It's only softwood, so dunno how long it will last in British climate, but it's straight, largely knot-free, easy to cut & screw.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceptionally good value I have used this component many times and if used with realistic joist centre width spaces it supported all of my six seater garden set even when all sat on without any noticable sagging. We are not exactly slim either! Just remember to give it an extra good preservative though becuse once built they will be out of reach. Thanx for an excellent product at a brilliant price.
