As your family expands you'll probably have some different considerations when you renovate your bathroom. However, that doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice style or functionality. In this guide, we outline our top family bathroom ideas, so you can create a space that’s practical, stylish and safe.

Freestanding bath

A bath is usually seen as a necessity in a family bathroom. If you want to create a family space that's still has a luxury feel, consider installing a freestanding bath.

Freestanding baths will give your bathroom a touch of opulence, whilst also allowing plenty of space for the kids to have a bath. Equally as important, a freestanding bath is the perfect space for adults in the family to relax and unwind. If you have a smaller bathroom but still want to install a freestanding bath, you could pair it with a compact shower enclosure.

Add modern features to a shower bath

Many of us won’t have the space to install a freestanding bath, which is why shower baths are so popular with families. These give you the option to enjoy a refreshing shower or a relaxing bath in the same space. Despite their popularity, for many shower baths aren’t seen as a stylish bathroom component, but a necessity. However, this doesn’t need to be the case.

Shower baths are now available with sleek matt black shower screens that will give your bathroom an industrial edge. Similarly, swap out standard chrome bath taps with a set of modern matt black bath taps and you’ll be left with a hugely stylish but still functional family bath.

Mono basin taps

If you’re designing a family bathroom that's going to be used by younger children, go for mono basin taps. These feature a single lever for controlling both temperature and water flow, which makes them much simpler for children to use than pillar taps.

This will make it easier to encourage your children to turn the tap off while they're brushing their teeth, and will help prevent any accidents occurring from taps being left on.

Soft close toilets seats

If you want children to learn a habit, it’s a good idea to make it as easy as possible. Soft close toilet seats only need a light push to make them gradually close, making it much easier for younger family members to close the seat when they leave the bathroom. There’s also the added bonus of no more loud noises or trapped fingers if the seat is dropped accidentally.

Embrace bright colours

When you’re looking to design a bathroom you and your kids will love, don’t be afraid to step away from standard white and grey bathroom tiles and go for something more vibrant.

A bright bathroom will help you feel positive and energised every morning, whilst also being a space your kids won’t dread having to go into for bath time!

Double basin

If you're looking to create a bathroom that will accommodate the needs of everyone in your family, double basins are a great option. They're ideal for families as they help prevent conflicts over who gets to use the sink next in the morning, giving your children space to brush their teeth while you’re getting ready.

Fun wall art

As we’ve already stated, we think family bathrooms should be fun and inviting places that your children enjoy being in. However, many bathrooms feature plain walls and sleek fixtures which can make a space feel cold and uninviting. You can use wall art to counteract this and create a warmer, more welcoming bathroom space.

Whether it’s animals, dinosaurs or even some of their best drawings, this is just one small way you can make your bathroom feel like a true family space.

Maximise storage with fitted bathroom furniture

Family bathrooms need to accommodate toiletries, towels and other accessories for lots of different family members. In our smaller British bathrooms, this can lead to a cluttered, claustrophobic space. You can counteract this by installing lots of storage, which is where fitted bathroom furniture comes in.

Fitted bathroom furniture is designed to fully maximise the amount of storage space in your bathroom, with units that fit together seamlessly to create a stylish and hugely functional storage area.

Thermostatic showers

When you’re designing your family bathroom, safety should be high on your list of priorities. Thermostatic showers are just one of the ways you can protect your children.

Thermostatic showers provide protection against sudden changes in temperature when someone else in the home uses water. This means no more freezing cold, or more importantly for your children, scalding hot changes in water temperature as you shower.

Many shower valves will also include a button or control that prevents the shower temperature being turned above 38 degrees.

Anti slip bath mat

For families, bathrooms are often the most used room in the entire home. They're also a place where accidents can happen. A well-designed bathroom will help prevent slips and falls and the best way to do that is with an anti-slip bath mat.

Non-slip bath mats are perfect for family bathrooms because they protect against slips, while also protecting your floors from being drenched by wet feet. They can be easily washed and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit any bathroom.

Family bathrooms can be hectic places at times. However, with the right storage solutions and some little extra touches, you can create a space that's child friendly and beautiful.
